Spanish organic wine

Have you ever tasted organic wines? Whatever your answer is this article will interest you.

First of all we have to make clear that organic wines are not the same as biodynamic wines, they have common characteristics but they are not exactly the same. Later we will explain the differences.

Organic wines

Organic wines are those produced from grapes whose treatment excludes chemical products (such as fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides).

Priority is given, to the use of natural products such as compost, and the soil is protected with mulch and the vineyard is worked without the use of machinery. In the event of diseases in the grapes, only permitted products are used, such as Bordeaux wine stock (lime, copper sulfate and water), invented centuries ago by vine growers in the Bordeaux region of France.

Although for many experts there is no difference between this type of wines with those of conventional production, the real relevance they have is related more to ecological awareness. We understand that it gathers a deeper sense of its relationship with the ancestral processes of production and possesses a special characteristic that for many, gives a priceless value to this type of wines.

Organic and Biodynamic wines

Once we know what organic wines are, it is important to point out that all biodynamic wines are organic, but not the other way around.

In biodynamic wines the main difference is that they use the lunar calendar for harvesting, picking, etc. To make biodynamic wines requires a great deal of knowledge and a lot of time spent tending the vineyards.

Natural wines

Natural wines are wines obtained with as little processing as possible, organically grown and transformed without adding or removing anything in the winery. No additives or processing aids are used, and “intervention” in the natural fermentation process is kept to a minimum. Therefore, neither fining nor (strict) filtration is used. The result is a wine that is alive, healthy and full of natural microbiology.

Sustainable Spanish wines

Spain has been highly involved with the environment for years, and this has had repercussions in the wine sector, which in 2011 created Wineries for Climate Protection, This certificate, managed by the Spanish Wine Federation and granted by the Spanish Association for Standardization, is the only specific seal in the wine sector in terms of environmental sustainability. The WfCP certification is aimed at the continuous improvement and sustainability of wineries, acting on four fundamental pillars:

  • Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
  • Water management
  • Waste reduction and energy efficiency
  • Renewable energies

It is objective is to position itself as an international benchmark in the wine and environmental field, seeking solutions and best practices for wineries.
